| 72 and going strong |

My career spanned an 11 year period from 1958 to 1969 driving
in GT cars, sports racing cars, Formula 3 and Formula 2 cars. In 1973/4 I was the team manager for the works March Formula
Atlantic team and the driver I hired was Alan Jones. Let the record books stand for the success we achieved. In 1975,
I bought and ran a 2nd Hesketh for Alan to drive alongside James Hunt in the Hesketh team and this was the launching
pad for Alan's success in Formula one. He went on to sign for Williams and subsequently became the World F1 Champion in 1980. His
book, Alan Jones, 'Driving-Ambition' is a great read and chronicles our association together and his F1 career. I was invited
to join the BRDC in 1966 after winning my first British F3 Championship and that was one of the proudest days of my life and
racing career. In 1969 a huge accident terminated my race driving days so, my ultimate ambition to make it in F1 as a driver was never realised.
I very much enjoyed being an entrant in the mid seventies. I found it more nerve wracking
than being a driver with all the responsibilities of running a team. As a professional driver, one used to turn up....do the
business, then go out and party! Running a team is a 24/7 occupation and there's no time for fun at all. However, the
sense of satisfaction when your car and driver performs 100% and a win is forthcoming...wow! It's a tremendous buzz and
worth all the hard work and effort.

A PLAN THAT WAS DEVELOPED FOR SILVERSTONE IN 2006
In April 2006, in association with my good friend Tom Barnard, he and
I produced a plan for the potential way forward at Silverstone. This took into account that a new Grand Prix contract was
essential in 2009 and, in order to accommodate one, it was necessary to update all of the facilities at the circuit to increase
the footfall and bring more business to the estate. We envisaged developing the site as a leisure destination to make the
property an all-year-round attraction and have it working and producing revenues 365 days a year. As it turned out, the BRDC
administration rejected the proposal out of hand and embarked on its own course of developing a masterplan. Some 18 months
later, they still are in the process of doing so and now, in October 2007 have still not submitted any detailed plan to ensure
that the British Grand Prix will remain at Silverstone after 2009. A great shame for all concerned, especially the British
enthusiasts!
